The HEART framework, developed by Kerry Rodden and her team at Google, is designed to measure user experience at scale. Avoiding vanity metrics

Sign-ups feel like growth, but they measure intent, not value delivery. A product with 100,000 sign-ups and a 3% activation rate has 3,000 users who actually experienced the product. Track activated users instead, and decompose sign-ups only if you need to understand top-of-funnel volume for a specific reason.
Page views and session duration
High page views can mean users are engaged, or it can mean they are lost. Long session duration can signal deep usage or frustration. Without context from the metric tree, these numbers are ambiguous. Replace them with task completion rate or core action frequency, which have clearer causal links to retention and value.
Total registered users
This number only goes up, which makes it useless as a health indicator. A metric that cannot decline cannot signal a problem. Use monthly active users, weekly active users, or daily active users depending on your product's natural usage frequency. These metrics reflect ongoing engagement, not historical accumulation.
Feature launch count
Shipping more features is not inherently valuable. What matters is whether those features are adopted and whether that adoption moves the metrics upstream in the tree. Track feature adoption rate (percentage of active users who use the feature within 30 days) instead of simply counting releases.
Raw NPS without segmentation
A single NPS score for the entire product hides more than it reveals. Power users and churning users contribute to the same number.
